Anyone have any laptop recommendations? My dual-core i5 2017 MacBook has seen better days... No particular OS preference.

The L14 Gen 2 (https://psref.lenovo.com/syspool/Sys/PDF/ThinkPad/ThinkPad_L14_Gen_2_AMD/ThinkPad_L14_Gen_2_AMD_Spec.pdf) is a solid little machine with a great value prop. If you go with the 5850U, you can upgrade the RAM to 32GB/64GB on the cheap with a couple of SODIMMs from your fav PC hardware retailer. 8C/16T under 25w, with 32-64GB of RAM - hard to beat for the price.
I've got an L14 Gen 1 with the 4750u and 32GB of RAM. Been a trooper for 12 months so far with no sign of slowing down. Helps that I like to tinker and I was able to replace the keyboard and trackpad with readily available parts from the higher-end Thinkpads with a screwdriver and some spare time 😅

Oh, and perfect Linux compat (you mentioned no OS pref, but if you aren't a fan of Windows)

@zaki_saad Thanks for the recommendation! I ended up going with a Dell Inspiron 14 (5825U), which seems to be one of the few thin-and-light laptops left with upgradable RAM. Lenovo UK doesn't seem to offer the L14 in the configuration you suggested, but it may have been a good amount more expensive anyway if the other models they list are anything to go by! 😅 How do you find the battery on yours?

Nice, 8x Zen 3 cores will give your mobile productivity a massive boost compared to your old dual core i5!
I sunk around AUD1300 factoring all upgrades and a 3yr warranty option, which was fairly cheap vs. competing units here down under.
I get between 3 to 6 hours depending on workload - heavy dev sessions hit it hard, but general browsing just sips on the 4 cell battery.
Enjoy the new toy 😄

Yeah, the Inspiron has a 4-cell 54Wh battery so it sounds like I might have a similar experience to you. The spec sheet refers to a model with a 67Wh battery, so that might be an interesting upgrade to explore eventually.
Thanks, looking forward to becoming a Linux power user now! 😎
