interesting! I wonder if this would be a good alternative to athena which doesnt seem to have great DBT support and some features/docs are missing

Could be! It’s definitely in response to Bigquery and Snowflake starting to eat redshift’s lunch

@pat_nadolny - My thoughts exactly. While they are putting it under the Redshift brand, conceptually it seems more sibling to Athena. It would be interesting to explore how compatible this Redshift iteration is with the Glue Data Catalog, and whether there's built-in interop with Athena here.

I imagine the Athena tap and target could possibly be adapted (or forked) to support Redshift Serverless.

yeah maybe well need to test it out. I used Redshift in the past and other than cluster management it seems easier to use than Athena. I've had a hard time with Athena because its not very well documented and links to Presto docs but some features arent supported, also for DBT the one thing to note was that dbt_utils doesnt work with Athena right now which is kind of a bummer

Oh, yeah. Totally! No offense taken. 🙂 I mean, Athena was the only real serverless SQL option on AWS prior to this announcement. (I guess except Glue's Spark serverless option, which has its own hurtles.)
