the new Google Analytics V4, is this compatible with the the GA tap? GA V4 doesnt have a view ID, only has Account and Property levels
Might be via bigquery
@dwayne Which specific V4 API are you referring to, which doesn't support View ID?
d
Hey mate, Screenshot of the config UI and docs https://meltano.com/plugins/extractors/google-analytics.html#oauth-credentials-client-id View ID is a mandatory field, I suspect this is the same for the cli?
d
@dwayne The CLI doesn't actually validate the config, only the UI does, so you can try leaving it unset and seeing if the tap will complain or not when invoking it using the CLI
It will probably complain, but if you're confident that it's actually no longer required (or no longer supported at all?) we can of course modify the tap (and Meltano's "required" rules) to that extent
Note that the docs still list viewId as required: https://developers.google.com/analytics/devguides/reporting/core/v4/basics, so maybe we're talking about a different API?
d
Interesting, I see:
There is no “view” level section of GA4. Whereas traditional Universal Analytics famously has three levels (Account, Property, and View), GA4 only has Account and Property levels.
d
GA4 is the new Google Analytics, and there is no longer an option to create the old GA version. With GA4 they have changed the structure quite a bit, and its flat
d
https://developers.google.com/analytics/devguides/reporting/core/v4/basics says:
Note: This API does not support GA4 properties. Please join the Analytics Data API Trusted Testers program to be among the first to test and provide feedback on the new reporting features for GA4 propreties.
d
Data studio I went from over 200 dimensional fields to 47, And the suggestion is to then now link your GA4 to Bigquery, then link your connections into that with a daily snapshot
I feel GA4 is still in beta and its now forced upon us
so everything GA3 is now legacy systems
d
Sounds like it, since it's not supported by the current API, and the new API https://developers.google.com/analytics/devguides/reporting/data/v1 is listed as:
Warning: This is an early preview version of the API and is subject to change. While we will try to notify you of upcoming changes, you should expect to encounter breaking changes before the APIs are publicly released.
So we should look into updating tap-google-analytics to use the new Data API (once it's no longer an early preview, I guess)
d
BigQuery is the only solution I can see if the above is correct
d
Did they really launch GA4 officially without stable API support? That's crazy
d
yep.
d
Yeah, sounds like it
Looks like @niall_woodward has experience with it (he's listed as a contributor)
We should look into adding OOTB support for it, add it to https://meltano.com/plugins/extractors/ with proper docs
d
yeah, I really think its going to be the Google new order of things
d
Yeah, I guess I'm not surprised
d
we have the loader in the UI, not the extractor
I know UI isnt a priority tho
d
Yeah, tap-bigquery is not discoverable yet (Meltano doesn't know its settings metadata yet), but you can add it as a custom plugin: https://meltano.com/docs/command-line-interface.html#how-to-use-custom-plugins
Once it's discoverable, it'll show up in the UI as well 🙂
d
easy
d
Wanna create an issue for that (making it discoverable), since it sounds like you're going to try out this route? 🙂 Once you've got it working for yourself, you can then contribute the metadata to make it work for everyone: https://meltano.com/docs/contributor-guide.html#discoverable-plugins
Of course I can assist you in getting it to work
d
@ed_bergavera can you please review above and raise the required issues in the system
e
Hi @dwayne I’ll review and look into it.

Hi all! I see this is an old thread but still got the similar problem: when requesting the GA data from the view - "Invalid value at 'report_requests[0].view_id' (TYPE_STRING), <the_view_id_i_configured_in_tap-ga">, reason=invalid, status=400, not sure why it's complaining if the view id is correct
