Hi! I am using the Meltano Docker image. While trying to install a custom extractor, I get this error:
Extractor 'tap-woocommerce' could not be installed: failed to install plugin 'tap-woocommerce'.
tap-woocommerce requires Python '>=3.8, <4' but the running Python is 3.6.12
You are using pip version 18.1, however version 20.2.4 is available.
You should consider upgrading via the 'pip install --upgrade pip' command.
Failed to install plugin(s)
But I already updated pip in the container.
root@0a754aee14a5:/projects# pip install --upgrade pip
Requirement already up-to-date: pip in /usr/local/lib/python3.6/site-packages (20.2.4)
It seems that Meltano uses a different binary of pip? What am I doing wrong. 🙂

it's failing because it needs Python 3.8+ but the Meltano image is using Python 3.6. Last I checked Meltano wouldn't work on Python 3.8 so you might be stuck there unless those blockers have been removed

I feared that this might be the case 😞

@jonas_b As @tom_elliff mentioned, Python 3.8 is not currently supported officially (https://gitlab.com/meltano/meltano/-/issues/1956), but with the two blocking issues now resolved, there's nothing keeping us from bumping the requirement and the version used by the Docker image anymore, except for making sure that CI runs the tests in 3.6, 3.7, and 3.8. In the mean time, you can consider writing your own Dockerfile that'll use Python 3.8 and will
pip install meltano
, since it should work fine as long as your plugins support Python 3.8 (which most should).
