Hi 👋 i'm struggling to load additional taps, running Meltano locally with Docker
Copy code
docker run -v $(pwd):/project -w /project meltano/meltano add --custom extractor tap-covid-19
The `namespace` refers to the data source name.
It is used to infer compatibility between components.
(namespace): Aborted!
Am I doing something silly! https://www.singer.io/tap/covid-19-public-data/

Hi @louis_knight-webb! Did you enter any text in when it asked for the namespace? Using the name of the tap as the namespace could make sense, so in this case I'd try 'tap-covid-19'
d
@al_whatmough Thanks Al, I think that should work! @louis_knight-webb Thanks for reporting this here; the fact that this wasn't obvious means the documentation needs an update. I'll handle that tomorrow!
l
Thanks @al_whatmough @douwe_maan. It never asked for a namespace, I literally typed the command
docker run -v $(pwd):/project -w /project meltano/meltano add --custom extractor tap-covid-19
and then got the error
Ok have managed to get it appearing as a connection by adding the following the config:
extractors:
  - label: COVID
    name: tap-covid-19
    namespace: tap-covid-19
    pip_url: git+<https://github.com/singer-io/tap-covid-19.git>

Hey again @louis_knight-webb, ah you could try running the docker command with the
--interactive
flag like this:
docker run --interactive -v $(pwd):/project -w /project meltano/meltano add --custom extractor tap-covid-19
Then you can type the namespace etc in that way
by editing the config directly like that it doesn't actually install the covid 19 tap, which is why you saw that error above
l
Magic, working now thanks 🙂
d
@louis_knight-webb Editing the meltano.yml file directly like you did would've actually worked as well if you had followed it by
meltano install
, but Al is right:
meltano add --custom
is the recommended approach, but expects to be run in interactive mode, which is not enabled by default when using
docker run
. I'll make sure both are more clear going forward!
l
Got it. I'm just a docker noob! Thanks for being so responsive all
d
@louis_knight-webb Thanks for giving us a try! 😄
