Hey all, I've been trying to run: `meltano invoke ...
# plugins-dbt

Hey all, I've been trying to run:
meltano invoke dbt-snowflake:freshness
to no avail. Using v 1.2.0, the message that returns is: Command 'freshness' could not be found. Transformer 'dbt-snowflake' supports the following commands: clean, compile, deps, run, seed, snapshot, test Any thoughts on why this is failing? I see 'freshness' as an available command in the docs?
p
@connor_lough that command was added only a month or so ago so its possible that your plugin lock file is outdated and doesnt have that command yet. This assumes youre using meltano 2.0+. If so you can try the update lock command
meltano lock dbt-snowflake --update
to check for plugin definition updates. Of course make sure youre changes are committed to git first because it will overwrite your lock file if updates exist on the hub.

Hey Pat, before you responded to this I chased down some related threads and your comments in another one worked. Can you tell me why this worked? I thought the colon was necessary?
meltano --environment=dev invoke dbt-snowflake source freshness
p
@connor_lough sure!
meltano invoke dbt-snowflake source freshness
should be equivalent to
meltano invoke dbt-snowflake:freshness
behind the scenes. The
invoke
command allows you to pass any arbitrary arguments (i.e.
source freshness
) to the underlying executable because invoke only executes a single plugin at a time. With
meltano run
you dont get that capability because you can run many plugins together so arbitrary arguments arent supported. Thats why the meltano commands exist so you can do something like
meltano run tap-csv target-postgres dbt-postgres:freshness
. In your command youre sending dbt the appropriate arguments. Using
invoke
its just a matter of preference whether you use the meltano command or pass dbt the arguments directly. Does that make sense?
c
That does make sense! Thank you!

@pat_nadolny can you open an issue on how we could improve the docs around this?
p
@taylor I created https://github.com/meltano/meltano/issues/6634, there was existing docs but thought it might be helpful to add it as an FAQ answer somewhere.
