I merged a new feature for target-snowflake yesterday that should make onboarding even more seamless. Theres a new initialize command
meltano invoke target-snowflake --initialize
that will kick off some interactive prompts to seed your account with the objects (system user/role, database, warehouse, grants, etc.) needed to get started. This is something we talked about in office hours a while back related to improving the onboarding experience and I had created https://github.com/MeltanoLabs/target-snowflake/issues/21. Now, along with the great work @ken_payne did to automatically create intermediate objects like file formats and stages, you should theoretically be able to create a new snowflake account and load data without having to manually set anything up. Check out the README docs and this

short demo▾

I put together of using on a brand new test account. Let me know what you think!

This is so cool! In theory we could have this on tap-snowflake too so users could create a user just for the extraction, right?
p
Yeah good point! The code should be exactly the same
j
Perfect timing, I just created a trial snowflake account like 30 minutes ago so I'll be looking at this video for reference ;)
p
Let me know if you run into anything or have any feedback
d
Could we define a
command
and let it be
meltano invoke target-postgres:initialize
? 🙂 Or even better,
:init
, to mirror
meltano init
.
meltano run target-snowflake:init
may work as well
p
@douwe_maan yeah I can add that for sure. Although what advantages do you see in having it as a meltano command vs a CLI argument?
d
@pat_nadolny No specific advantage but to promote our commands feature which in other cases could incorporate more command line args than just a single flag
