hey. I would love to use this project. but I have some pretty big issues. the biggest is that it won't even connect to Facebook ads api. I started from scratch in docker multiple times and have tried with creating different Marketing API keys. nothing works and keep getting the same message.
is it maybe something to do with that it is using a deprecated api? https://gitlab.com/meltano/tap-facebook/-/issues/5#note_416266167
d
@joy_timmermans Hi Joy! Have you tried setting up and trying out tap-facebook using the CLI instead of the UI? The CLI is more mature, and will give more useful error messages. You probably are running into the deprecated API issue. As a workaround, you can use https://github.com/singer-io/tap-facebook instead of our https://gitlab.com/meltano/tap-facebook, as suggested in https://gitlab.com/meltano/tap-facebook/-/issues/5#note_416266167. We're planning to make that the default tap-facebook for new users as well: https://gitlab.com/meltano/meltano/-/issues/2369

When I try to run the command:
C:\devABI\fb_project\try1>docker run --interactive -v %cd%:/projects -w /projects meltano/meltano tap-facebook -c config.json --discover
It returns "no such command"
@joy_timmermans did it work with you?
d
@zlatan You're missing an
invoke
after
meltano/meltano
! Also note that the config file will be generated automatically, and
-c config.json
will be ignored: https://meltano.com/docs/configuration.html
j
@douwe_maan okay will try the cli. but the docker is kinda wierd swell. the docker compose file that comes with the git doesn't work for me and also not the ones in the documentation. I tried
docker run meltano/meltano add extractor tap-facebook
but that gave me _Use
meltano init <project_name>
to create one._
d
@joy_timmermans If you're using Docker, don't forget to mount your project directory into the container, as per https://meltano.com/docs/getting-started.html#docker-installation:
When running a
meltano
subcommand that requires access to your project (which you'll create in the next step), you'll also need to mount the project directory into the container and set it as the container's working directory:
docker run -v $(pwd):/project -w /project meltano/meltano <args>
@joy_timmermans What problems were you encountering with the docker compose file? I assume you're referring to the one from https://meltano.com/docs/ui.html#docker-compose?
j
I used
docker run -v -d $(pwd):/project \

-w /project \

-p 5000:5000 \

meltano/meltano
to start the container. do I have to use that whole command to also run commands behind it? and I have tried multiple. I dont have python 3.8 installed atm so I cant install the cli, so i tried the one from here https://gitlab.com/meltano/files-docker-compose/-/blob/master/bundle/docker-compose.yml and the one that is in the main project updated a year ago https://gitlab.com/meltano/meltano/-/blob/master/docker-compose.yml
d
Yeah, if you're using the Docker image you're always goin to need those
docker run
options. You can of course define an alias for
Copy code
docker run -v $(pwd):/project -w /project meltano/meltano
to save you a copy-and-paste headache 🙂 As for
docker-compose.yml
, the one in the main repo is actually for use while developing Meltano itself. Inside your project, https://gitlab.com/meltano/files-docker-compose/-/blob/master/bundle/docker-compose.yml is the way to go.
j
@douwe_maan okay I got the compose to work with your suggestions and also with the alias. the only thing I dont understand atm is the workaround for Facebook integration. I looked at the other project but I dont get where you need to put the configuration that is added with the readme. in what folder should I put it in? and when it is put in correctly do you see it update in the ui?

If you use a Singer tap through Meltano, you should not manually create the
config.json
file, but instead use Meltano's configuration layers: https://meltano.com/docs/configuration.html If you're getting started, I suggest following these steps: https://meltano.com/docs/getting-started.html#configure-the-extractor
and when it is put in correctly do you see it update in the ui?
Yep! Managing config in the UI and
meltano config
CLI is equivalent, in that both store and read from
meltano.yml
and
.env
