Hello Meltano Team, Trying to setup Meltano as docker container. Initialized the project following the instructions on Meltano website. Got stuck at meltano: command not found, while trying to create a tap Any suggestions or help greatly appreciated. Thanks
d
@harsha_aleti Welcome! Can you share the exact command you ran that resulted in that error message?
h
$ meltano add extractor tap-csv -bash: meltano: command not found
I can view version of the meltano cli though. $ sudo docker run meltano/meltano --version meltano, version 1.51.0
d
@harsha_aleti If you've not installed the
meltano
CLI locally, but have instead pulled the
meltano/meltano
Docker image, you'll want to always run Meltano using
docker run meltano/meltano <args>
, instead of calling
meltano <args>
directly. I now realize that that's not quite clear from https://meltano.com/docs/getting-started.html#docker-installation. I'll add a note there.
Note that under https://meltano.com/docs/getting-started.html#add-an-extractor-to-pull-data-from-a-source, step 2, there is an instruction specific for Docker users:
# If you're using Docker, don't forget to mount the project directory:
docker run -v $(pwd):/project -w /project meltano/meltano add extractor tap-gitlab
I'll make sure that's more clear from the start, though.

Thank you for the response. It worked after I added the command to mount the project directory. Looks like I need to input the command "docker run -v $(pwd):/project -w /project meltano/meltano <args>" every time when I want to invoke meltano command
d
@harsha_aleti Yep, if you're using the Docker image that's the way to go. You can of course define an alias for
Copy code
docker run -v $(pwd):/project -w /project meltano/meltano
to save you a copy-and-paste headache 🙂
h
I just did that. Thank you once again.
